If you want to remodel your home or fix your sink leaking, you may consider to hire a contractor. Finding a trusted contractor can be hard, as many home owners feel. In a worst case scenario, it’ll cause you to lose your home. According to FTC, some companies run multiple ads that seem to be for local businesses, but actually connect to call centers in another city. Operators in the call centers may give your low estimates, surprisingly. When those general contractors show up, they will charge you more than the estimates. Therefore, checking a contractor license is a must to help you avoid the contractor fraud.

How are licensed contractors broken down into categories?

CSLB licenses contractors in four different categories:
1. “A” General Engineering Contractor
2. “B” General Building Contractor
3. “C” Specialty Contractor
4. “D” Limited Specialty Contractor

“A” and “B” Contractors usually oversee projects and coordinate the specific licensed subcontractors for a job. “B” contractors cannot legally do a job if it only involves one trade. It’s appropriate for you to hire a licensed “B” general building contractor if your job requires more than two types of work. If you need only roofing, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or landscaping work, you’ll want to hire a “C” contractor licensed in that particular specialty.
